Modem Policy

The modem in your PSC Computer System is a reliable unit, but may not stand up to the following

  • Electrical Surges

  • Brownouts

  • Lightning Strikes

  • Electromagnetic Surges or Pulses

  • Electrostatic Discharge

  • Electromagnetic Interference

Always unplug your telephone line running to your PC during a thunderstorm. To dissipate Static Electricity which remains in a telephone line after a storm, plug your line that you would normal plug in to the modem into a regular phone jack on a phone or fax machine. After, you may plug back in your phone line to the appropriate line-in listed on your modem.

Another good source of protection is a Power strip or surge protector with phone line protection built in to the unit, this will help prevent some of the occurrences listed above.  But be warned.  These are not guarantees of no damage regardless of the level of protection.  The more protection you put between your computer and the electrical outlet the better.  Be safer than sorry.
